Walter Koenig, the actor who portrayed Pavel Chekov on the original "Star Trek" television series, died on Monday at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. He was 90.

Koenig's death leaves only two surviving marquee cast members from the original 1960s series: William Shatner, 95, who played Capt. James T. Kirk, and George Takei, 89, who played Hikaru Sulu. He is preceded in death by Leonard Nimoy (2015), DeForest Kelley (1999), James Doohan (2005), and Nichelle Nichols (2022).

Talent agent Zachery McGinnis confirmed the death. "Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world," McGinnis said.

Koenig joined the "Star Trek" cast in 1967 during the show's second season as the navigator of the Enterprise. The original series ran for 79 episodes across three seasons on NBC from 1966 to 1969. Following the television run, Koenig reprised the role of Chekov in seven films: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979), "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982), "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" (1984), "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (1986), "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" (1989), "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991), and "Star Trek Generations" (1994).

Koenig's career began in television in the early 1960s with appearances on programs including "General Hospital" and "I Spy." In the 1990s, he held a recurring role on the science fiction series "Babylon 5." He continued to work in the franchise, providing voice-over work for "Star Trek" video games and appearing in a 2023 episode of "Star Trek: Picard."

George Takei, who worked alongside Koenig for nearly six decades, remembered him as a "thoughtful man, and a loyal friend." Takei noted that Koenig served as the best man at his 2008 wedding, a date that coincides with Koenig's Sept. 14, 1936, birthday.

"Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend," Takei said in an Instagram statement on Monday. "To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."

McGinnis said Koenig maintained a relationship with the series' fan community throughout his life. "Walter's legacy extends far beyond the screen," McGinnis said. "Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it."

Koenig remained active in his profession until his death, winning the best actor award at this year's Independent Shorts Awards for his role in "Mr. Fleischmann."
