Bilateral ties between Moldova and Ukraine have become a central pillar of regional economic stability. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, 26 October, to close gaps in gas supply and trade agreements with Ukrainian leadership.

The visit follows a series of high-level contacts earlier in the month. On 12 October, Tofan announced that Moldova was considering purchasing natural gas from Ukraine to meet domestic needs. Two days later, on 14 October, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan to discuss winter preparations and common challenges in the energy sector.

Tofan brought three cabinet members to Kyiv to support the negotiations. The delegation includes Vladimir Bolea, minister of infrastructure and regional development, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, and Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu. This cabinet-level presence signals the priority both governments place on securing energy and infrastructure links.

The agenda for the working visit includes meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. The Moldovan government stated that talks between the prime ministers will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and developing economic cooperation.

Both leaders will also attend the Kyiv International Economic Forum, which focuses on investment opportunities. Regional security and the paths for both nations toward the European Union are listed as key subjects for their bilateral discussions. The government noted that trade and economic development remain central to the planned negotiations.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu recently stated that her country is prepared to accept another influx of refugees from Ukraine if the humanitarian situation worsens. Her remarks addressed the readiness of the state to accommodate more arrivals should departures from Ukraine increase.

The delegation's schedule is packed with formal meetings and forum participation. Tofan is expected to meet with Ukrainian senior leadership to finalize the terms of the gas purchase and broader economic cooperation outlined in the government's statement.
