A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas after a strong current pulled her under while she attempted to reach her two sons during a snorkeling trip. The incident took place near the southern point of North Bimini on Tuesday.

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the woman was in the water with her husband and their two sons when the current separated the boys from the group. As she swam toward them, the force stated that the woman was also swept away. Both children were eventually pulled from the water safely.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. reporting an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time officers arrived, the woman had already been transported to the local clinic. A doctor on site pronounced her dead after medical teams failed to revive her. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the sea.

The force confirmed that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office acknowledged the case and stated it is working with local authorities to assist the family.

North Bimini is the closest part of the Bahamian archipelago to the US mainland, situated between Andros and Miami. The island is a known destination for divers and snorkelers, and it has historical ties to the writer Ernest Hemingway. It also hosts a major shark research facility.

The police statement described the sequence of events as a preliminary account. The family was in the water for recreational activities when the conditions changed. The strong current posed an immediate threat to the children, prompting the mother’s intervention. Her efforts to secure her sons resulted in her being taken by the same force that had swept the boys.
