The turquoise water near the southern tip of Bimini was calm enough for a family snorkeling trip until the current shifted.
A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died on Tuesday after being swept away while trying to rescue her two sons.
Police said the woman was swimming with her husband and children when a strong current carried both boys out to sea.
She followed them into the water to reach her sons. Both boys were pulled from the sea alive. The woman was also recovered but was unresponsive.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10am reporting a woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. They found her already being treated at a local clinic.
A doctor pronounced her dead there after CPR efforts failed. The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed the family is from England. Officials are coordinating with local authorities to support the family.
