Three brothers, two of them wealthy real-estate brokers, were each sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday for drugging and raping dozens of women over a period of decades. The sentences were handed down by a court in New York.
Tal Alexander, 40, and twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, were convicted in March. Jurors found that they used their money and social standing to draw women to parties and luxury homes, where the women were sexually assaulted.
Before the sentences were announced, the court heard from 12 victims, including one who did not take part in the trial. They described the lasting psychological harm they suffered and said they wished the shame they had carried would fall on the defendants instead. Many urged the judge to impose the maximum penalty of life in prison for each brother.
Maya Miller said she lost all sense of safety after Tal Alexander raped her in 2014. "I carry a quiet funeral within me for the person I might've become if this never happened to me," she said. Another victim, who used the pseudonym Isa Brooks, said Tal and Alon Alexander raped her when she was 16, and that she lost the ability to trust herself. "I had no idea the danger I was in til it was too late," she said. A third woman said that when she planned to come forward, Tal Alexander threatened that he knew where her sister worked.
While the women spoke, the brothers showed little emotion. They looked straight ahead or conferred with their lawyers, who said they had told their clients not to look at the victims so that it would not be misread as staring. The brothers also showed no visible reaction as their sentences were read out.
Prosecutor Elizabeth Espinosa argued that the brothers deserved the maximum punishment, saying the facts "paint a truly devastating picture". "For years, they honed their methods of luring women with the promise of luxury," she said, adding that the men were "completely unmoved by the path of suffering they left behind them."
The five-week trial featured testimony from 11 women, several of whom said they were minors at the time. They said the brothers gave them gifts and flew them to places including Aspen and the Bahamas, where they were given drugs and then raped. Prosecutors said the brothers' abusive pattern began in high school, although the trial covered offences starting in 2008. They accused the men of slipping drugs into drinks, restraining victims during the assaults and ignoring screams and explicit requests to stop.
Defence lawyers maintained that the sex was consensual and that their clients were womanizers rather than sexual abusers. They asked for the lowest possible sentence of 15 years for each brother.
Tal and Oren built their wealth selling luxury properties in New York and Miami. They worked for the American real estate firm Douglas Elliman, handling sales for celebrities including Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. In 2022 they founded their own New York-based company, Official. Alon worked at the family's private security business, Kent Security.
