Spain's national football federation has called off all 24 Copa del Rey matches that had been scheduled for Wednesday, after a train accident in the central part of the country left at least 30 people dead.

Authorities said about 80 people were injured and warned that the death toll could still rise. The crash happened when a high-speed train ran into the back of another train that had come to a halt on the track.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said it was "shocked by the tragic train accident" and ordered the postponements "in solidarity with the victims". It added that "the entire Spanish football community stands united in grief over this tragedy and has made itself available to the authorities to assist the victims of this devastating accident."

The federation said it will publish a revised tournament schedule at a later date. Matches planned for Thursday in the first round have not been postponed, and games went ahead as planned on Tuesday.

Among the fixtures affected on Wednesday were Navalcarnero against Real Betis, Salamanca against Celta Vigo, and Tavernes against Valencia.

As of the latest reports, the Spanish league has not announced any postponements for the weekend's matches.

Several clubs offered messages of sympathy. FC Barcelona said on social media that it wished "to convey its support and solidarity to the families and friends of the victims and to wish all those injured a speedy recovery."

Real Madrid said in a statement that the club shared "in the grief of everyone impacted during these moments of profound sadness."

Sevilla FC observed a moment of silence before their training session on Wednesday. The club also cancelled a press conference with manager Luis Garcia Plaza, which had been planned ahead of their match against Sporting de Hortaleza.
