Flavio Bolsonaro declared himself the leader of Brazil upon his arrival in Miami on Wednesday morning.
The right-wing senator landed at Miami-Opa Locka airport accompanied by his wife and two daughters. They disembarked from a Gulfstream G400 aircraft. Their route involved a flight to Argentina late Tuesday, followed by a private jet transfer to Guayaquil in Ecuador before reaching Florida.
Bolsonaro lost the presidential election on Sunday to incumbent President Luiz Inacio da Silva, known as Lula. His party has accepted the results, and international observers have deemed the vote fair. Bolsonaro, however, has alleged irregularities. He has not conceded defeat. His party’s acknowledgment of the outcome stands in contrast to his own public claims.
In an open letter posted to the social media platform X, Bolsonaro initially called himself the "elected president." He later deleted that version. An updated letter described him as the rightful "leader." He addressed his 60 million voters directly. He stated that "criminals who stole Brazil’s election" were part of a "criminal organization that has established a tyranny."
The senator fled Brazil after the Supreme Court asked him to surrender his passports to prevent his departure. He faces criminal investigations into financial crimes. Bolsonaro has characterized these probes as a political witch hunt by left-leaning justices. He lost his Senate immunity on Monday, a move he previously defended as a necessity to "defend myself against this travesty." According to the AFP news agency, he used his Italian citizenship to travel after his Brazilian and diplomatic passports were canceled.
US President Donald Trump declined to comment on the matter when asked by reporters at Joint Base Andrews. He reiterated his view that the Brazilian election was "very strange." The US State Department has confirmed it will grant visas to Bolsonaro and his family. This move mirrors the path taken by his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently jailed in Brazil on charges of leading a conspiracy to retain power after losing the 2022 election.
Lula accused the Trump administration of colluding with the Bolsonaro family during the campaign. The current situation threatens to widen the diplomatic gap between the two largest economies in the Americas.
