North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed the New Yalu River Bridge on Saturday, inaugurating the 3 kilometer infrastructure project that links the border city of Dandong with his capital. The opening marks the first time the structure has hosted a head of state, ending a 12 year period of delay after China finished construction. According to South Korea's unification ministry and China's Xinhua news agency, Kim arrived in Dandong to formally open the route, a move that solidifies a direct road connection between Pyongyang and Beijing.

During the visit, Kim met with Wang Huning, a member of the standing committee of the Communist Party of China. The two toured a local car factory and pledged to deepen their partnership. Xinhua reported that Kim stated North Korea is ready to work with China to carry forward their historical friendship and expand practical cooperation to deliver tangible benefits to both populations. Wang accompanied Kim to the bridge to see him off, according to the agency.

The timing of the trip coincides with the anniversary of China's first major victory in the Korean War, which occurred on October 25, 1950. That battle took place days after Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River into North Korea. Japan's Kyodo news agency reported that traffic controls were implemented around the bridge and a nearby war museum. Hotel bookings in the area were restricted, with diplomatic sources citing a visit by a senior North Korean official as the reason for the measures.

This is Kim's sixth visit to China. His previous trip occurred in September 2025, when he attended a military parade in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Xi visited Pyongyang in June, marking his first trip to the North in seven years. The new bridge adds to a growing network of links, as North Korea and Russia opened the first road bridge across their shared border in early September. These developments mean Pyongyang is now connected by road to both of its primary strategic partners.

Relations with South Korea have deteriorated sharply in recent weeks. Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, has issued approximately 10 statements criticizing Seoul since late September, a frequency the unification ministry described as unusual. She also announced plans to resume loudspeaker broadcasts at the border within days. These tensions stand in contrast to the strengthened engagement with Beijing.

Looking ahead, Xi will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen on November 18 and 19. Speculation has arisen regarding a potential meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump during or after the event. However, Reuters reported on Friday that US and South Korean officials assess the chance of such a meeting this year as low.
