French police arrested a 39-year-old man on Friday following a 15-minute shooting spree in two suburbs north of Paris that left one person dead and five others injured.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the attack was clearly a terrorist crime. Prosecutors are currently investigating whether the suspect, identified as Kevin T, conspired with a specific terrorist group. A member of his immediate family circle was also taken into custody to aid the ongoing inquiry.
The gunman drove through the working-class communities of Trappes and La Verriere, which have large immigrant and Muslim populations. He fired an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical centre, and a children's playground. Investigators found an older-style semiautomatic weapon from the World War II era and tear gas grenades in his vehicle.
Local MP Laurent Mazaury reported that the suspect told officers he wanted to kill foreigners. The victim who died was identified as Pengo Bassio Wangi. Among the wounded is a 12-year-old girl of North African descent who was shot eight times and transferred to a children's hospital for surgery. Prosecutors stated that three of the five injured are in critical condition.
President Emmanuel Macron labeled the incident a turning point for the nation. He said France remains determined to fight racism in all its forms. Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh described the attack as objectively racist and probably Islamophobic. He noted that the victims could easily have been his own relatives and that the girl's crime was likely being of colour.
The incident occurred while cost-of-living and student protests grip the country. Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday when more demonstrations are expected. Some far-right voices have blamed Muslim youths for the unrest, while National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the shooting as barbaric.
Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric. They pointed to Le Pen's campaign proposal to fine women who wear the headscarf in public. The French Muslim Council stated that promoters of anti-Muslim hate speech have blood on their hands. This local event sits within a wider European context where the European Parliament recently passed a resolution against Islamist entryism.
Researcher Farid Hafez of Georgetown University called the European Parliament vote a symbolic victory for anti-Muslim forces. Amnesty International reported in June that Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached emergency levels. The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency states that one in two Muslims in Europe face racial discrimination. In the United States, California's attorney general reported anti-Muslim hate crimes rose 54 percent in 2025, from 24 to 38.
