Greg Bovino described the removal of immigration agents from Minneapolis as a strategic surrender by the Trump administration. He made the comments during an interview conducted in Detroit, where he was campaigning for stricter border controls.

The former US border patrol chief, now 56, stated that the administration threw in the towel. He argued that deportations have since reached a virtual standstill. Bovino expressed regret for not arresting more undocumented residents in Minnesota during the initial phase of the operation.

He labeled his officers as the real victims of what he termed the most violent law enforcement mission in US history. Bovino maintained that video evidence did not prove the victims intended to harm agents. He insisted that violence was perpetrated against government staff and that citizens must follow the law to avoid consequences.

The operation that Bovino defended ended abruptly in January after two US citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were shot and killed. Footage of both incidents sparked a bipartisan backlash and widespread protests across the state. President Donald Trump initially described Good as having viciously run over an officer, but later called the deaths a tragedy and acknowledged that agents sometimes make mistakes.

Following the shootings, the White House ordered a de-escalation. Approximately 700 agents were withdrawn from the area, and Tom Homan, the White House border coordinator, assumed control of the operation. Bovino, who was removed from his position shortly after the incidents, said he still had not received a final explanation for his departure.

Earlier this month, the family of Renee Good filed two civil lawsuits against the federal government. The legal action alleges wrongful death and a conspiracy to interfere with the civil rights of protesters. The suit names Bovino and Jonathan Ross, the agent who shot Good, for their individual roles in the operation. The plaintiffs argued that the deployment created an environment for state-sponsored violence.

A White House spokeswoman previously dismissed the lawsuits as baseless. In response to Bovino's recent interview, the family's lawyers criticized his comments as propaganda. They stated that he could not act as judge, jury, and executioner. Their legal team said they look forward to deposing Bovino and other defendants.

Bovino has retired from the border patrol but remains active in political advocacy. He has called for total spectrum immigration enforcement backed by the military. He claimed without evidence that 100 million people are in the US illegally, while a White House spokesperson stated that more than 3 million illegal aliens had left the country due to current policies.

The former chief also hinted at entering the 2028 presidential race. He suggested that if politicians do not step up to do their jobs, he might see something happen. He recently addressed a far-right rally in Michigan, where activists called for the deportation of Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Senate candidate and US-born citizen.

El-Sayed is competing against Republican Mike Rogers for a Senate seat. If El-Sayed wins, he would become the first Muslim US senator. Bovino's remarks in Michigan occurred as he continued to push for tougher immigration enforcement measures in the lead-up to the midterms.
