Helen Haines, 65, is now classified as serious but stable, according to an update issued by The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on Saturday morning. This represents a shift from critical status five days after she was struck by a vehicle in north-east Victoria. The hospital noted that this is the first improvement recorded since she was airlifted to the facility following the incident on Monday. Haines, who serves as an independent member of parliament, sustained severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of both her legs.
Police state that the vehicle deliberately struck Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, a town located north-east of Melbourne. Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the collision. He appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Prosecutors indicate that additional charges, including attempted murder, could be added to the case.
Haines' husband, Phil, described the event as a "horrendous incident" on Wednesday. He stated that while his wife suffered significant physical injuries, her heart and mind remained "in good shape." Nugent's legal team told the court that their client has "mental health concerns" but did not provide specific details. Victoria Police, working with the Australian Federal Police, are continuing their investigation. They are examining whether drug use or medication influenced the driver's actions, although a motive has not yet been established. Nugent's family described themselves as long-time friends of Haines.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the incident for ABC television, noting a "rise in temperature" in Australian discourse. Haines entered parliament in 2019 following a career in nursing and midwifery. She has been vocal in her support for stronger climate action policies.
The investigation is ongoing, with police reviewing evidence related to the vehicle and the driver's condition prior to the strike. No further public updates on the legal proceedings are scheduled before the next court hearing.
