Four people sustained injuries after a vehicle fired shots at a building in Loganholme, a suburb south of Brisbane, on Saturday evening. Queensland police responded to the licensed premises on Bryants Road at 8.15 pm following reports of gunfire. The vehicle involved was observed departing the area, and the four victims were transported to a hospital for assessment of their conditions.
The incident occurred outside Fitzys Loganholme, the venue for the Logan City Titles Fight Night. Chris Stream, the deputy commander of Queensland police, described the scene as confronting. He noted that multiple individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the event, which was intended to showcase local talent.
Jon Raven, the mayor of Logan, told the Today show that the shooting has sent a shockwave through the community. Raven stated that residents are frightened and that this type of violence is new to the area. He recalled attending similar events in the past and described them as family friendly, with many children present. Raven expressed concern that the experience will impact the young attendees for the rest of their lives.
The mayor explained that the night was organized to steer children away from violence by using boxing to reconnect young people. He said the organizer, who loves the sport, would be devastated by the events. Raven added that the shooting is the opposite of what the organizer wanted to see in the community.
Logan City Titles issued a statement on social media on Sunday morning. The group said it was heartbroken by the incident and described the event as a community effort to highlight hard work and skill in the ring. The statement asserted that such incidents have no place in the boxing community or the wider society.
Police have not yet apprehended the offenders, who remain at large. Investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and contact them.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify the vehicle and the individuals responsible for the drive-by shooting.
