Melania Trump has secured a temporary ceasefire for the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky. Her office announced the agreement on Friday, crediting the First Lady with brokering the deal directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership. The arrangement is designed to allow humanitarian aid to reach the population and facilitate a civilian evacuation.

The localized truce is scheduled to take effect on Thursday, October 29. Both nations have agreed to halt all military action in the city to create a designated safe passageway. The First Lady’s office stated that she acted in her formal role as an exclusive intermediary to align the parties on technical procedures, timing, and terms. This type of announcement from a First Lady's office is rare in diplomatic affairs.

Mrs. Trump described the conditions in Oleshky as dire. She noted that the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents who urgently require medical attention, food, and clean water. According to her statement, residents face limited electricity, mined roads, and regular military attacks. She stated that without her intervention, it would have been impossible to bring in aid or evacuate the elderly population.

Under the plan, non-military civilian leaders from both countries will visit residents in their homes to assess their needs. Those who choose to leave will receive coordinated support and transportation to their destination. The First Lady said she expects some residents to go to Russia and others to Ukraine. She also arranged for Newsmax, a conservative American media outlet, to document the work of both teams on the ground.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly commented on the announcement. However, Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached regarding the occupied territory. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news. He wrote on X that it was a major positive step toward peace and that history would remember the First Lady's tireless work to help those in need.

The ceasefire follows a phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. The pope expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after Russia forcibly removed them from Ukraine.

This diplomatic move occurs as President Trump’s broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He previously stated he would end the conflict on his first day back in office. In recent days, he has grown frustrated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine needs a new leader. Earlier this week, President Trump told reporters that Russia has been fine on Ukraine and that they have not been doing much killing.
