Mbappe: 22 World Cup goals anchor trophyless Ballon d'Or bid

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London as an underdog, relying on individual statistical dominance to counter a season that ended without a single team trophy. While bookmakers favor other candidates, Mbappe has aggressively promoted his case, asserting that his performance on the pitch outweighs the absence of silverware.
The 2025-26 campaign, which covers the award period, yielded no titles for the Real Madrid forward at either the club or international level. His argument rests on a series of records, most notably his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament, finishing as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in 22 matches. This places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16.
Mbappe emphasized the weight of that record in recent interviews. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," he said. When asked about his vote, he replied simply: "Myself."
His club performance provided further support for his bid. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward believes these numbers make a compelling case for the award, stating, "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it."
The primary weakness in his campaign is the lack of team success. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This result extended their trophy drought to a second consecutive season. France also fell short at the World Cup, finishing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.
Rival candidates have stronger team resumes. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. Despite these advantages, Mbappe's manager Jose Mourinho has voiced support, noting, "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team."
Historical precedent suggests the odds are against Mbappe. Every Ballon d'Or winner in the past decade has won at least one trophy in the qualifying year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after leading PSG to a Champions League title, while Rodri won Euro 2024 and the Premier League before being named the winner two years ago.
The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. That year, Ronaldo scored 66 goals for club and country while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Mbappe has now been nominated nine times, with a third-place finish in 2023 representing his best result to date.
