Latvia’s National Armed Forces confirmed on Saturday, 24 October, that they had recovered the wreckage of a drone that crashed on domestic soil. The debris was located in the Alūksne district, putting an end to a search that had been paused for six days. The military stated that the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely entered Latvian airspace on 18 October.
The incident first drew attention after residents reported a sound resembling an explosion. In response, the National Armed Forces and the State Police launched an immediate search for a potential crash site. Officials halted that initial effort after two days, citing a lack of sufficient information to determine what had occurred.
With the debris now recovered, authorities have opened an investigation into the specific circumstances of the event. An internal review is also underway to assess how the incident unfolded. The military emphasized that no civilians were injured during the crash, and no civilian infrastructure sustained damage.
This discovery follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania just one week prior. On Sunday, 18 October, the wreckage of a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials stated that the drone entered its airspace from Poland.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the drone that flew into Lithuania contained explosives. Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He added that Ukraine expressed regret over the occurrence.
