More than 130 million names have been removed from India's voter lists since last year, a figure that has fueled a new wave of opposition protests in the capital.

On Sunday, the INDIA alliance, a coalition of opposition parties formed in 2023, organized a large demonstration at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. Tens of thousands of people attended the event, which was led by Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party and supported by the youth-led Cockroach movement. Participants carried flags and musical instruments while chanting slogans against the central government. The protest marked a renewed push for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The location of the rally shifted after police last month removed Jantar Mantar, the city's historic observatory and traditional protest site, from the list of approved venues for public demonstrations. Authorities prepared for the gathering by deploying thousands of police and paramilitary troops. Officials stated that they used more than 200 CCTV cameras, drones, and body-worn cameras to monitor the venue and the route taken by demonstrators.

Critics of the current voter list review argue the process is politically motivated and disproportionately impacts minorities, particularly Muslims. They claim the revision threatens to disenfranchise millions. Human Rights Watch issued a statement on Thursday saying the situation raises serious questions about the fairness of future elections in India. Elaine Pearson, the group's Asia director, called on authorities to immediately scrap the process, noting that it has denied marginalized people their right to vote and access to government services.

The Election Commission and the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi deny these allegations. They maintain that the revision is necessary to remove duplicate and ineligible entries from the rolls. The demand for Kumar's resignation has become a central issue for opposition parties, who accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of manipulating the electoral process. Supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party, a satirical online movement that began in summer after the chief justice compared unemployed youth to parasites, have been a visible presence in recent political disputes.

In July, protests from this same youth movement contributed to the resignation of the education minister, marking a notable setback for Modi, who has held power for more than 12 years. While Modi has not publicly addressed the latest demonstrations, some leaders of his party have dismissed the demonstrators as anarchists and suggested without evidence that foreign powers support them.

Suresh Sharma, a protester from Haryana state, described the current situation as a throttling of democracy. He said the system requires reform and that the voter roll revision must be stopped. Sharma demanded that Gyanesh Kumar resign and be arrested.
