Taiwan suspended most of its public and commercial operations on Friday to brace for the arrival of Typhoon Champi. The island government ordered schools and offices to shut down while air traffic was halted entirely. These drastic measures were taken as the storm system moved close to the coastline, delivering intense gusts and torrential downpours to the region.

The storm’s intensity has fluctuated over the past few days. It previously peaked with sustained winds reaching 298 kilometres per hour. By the time it approached the island from the southeast, that figure had dropped to 155 kilometres per hour. Meteorologists predict the eye will remain offshore. It will pass near the northeastern tip before curving north toward the southwestern islands of Japan.

The human toll began before the main landfall. One individual lost their life on Thursday when waves swept them away in Liuqiu. This location sits off the southeastern coast of the main island. Fire department officials confirmed the death. Additionally, 94 others sustained injuries during the early stages of the weather event. Authorities reported that more than 2,600 residents were moved from risky mountain zones to safety.

Transportation disruptions were severe but selective. The Transport Ministry announced the cancellation of all 262 domestic flights. It also scrapped 669 international departures. However, high-speed rail lines along the western coast continued operating without interruption. In the capital city of Taipei, subway services remained open. The city experienced only light rain and strong gusts, avoiding the worst of the weather.

The storm system is vast, with a radius of approximately 320 kilometres. This width is sufficient to blanket the majority of the island. Despite the size, experts believe the peak impact on Taiwan will last through Saturday. The system is expected to reach the southern mainland of Japan by Monday.

Neighbouring regions are also feeling the effects. In southwestern Japan, the typhoon has caused one injury and cut power to nearly 2,000 homes in Ishigaki. Dozens of flights to several islands have been cancelled. In the northern Philippines, the coast guard banned sailing in rough waters. The main airport in Basco closed, and windows were boarded up for protection. Classes were suspended in the island town of Calayan.

This cyclone has already traversed several Pacific islands earlier in the month. Guam was declared a federal disaster area after the storm passed through. The path of Champi highlights the ongoing challenges facing East Asian and Pacific communities during the peak of the storm season.
