Former President Barack Obama attacked the current administration on Saturday in Ohio, citing "cruelty and corruption" during President Donald Trump's second term. Speaking at a midterm election rally, Obama argued that voters have a rare opportunity to signal their dissatisfaction with recent governance.
Obama specifically targeted foreign policy decisions, stating that the president started an "unnecessary war that nobody asked for" regarding the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. He told the crowd that after two years of chaos and incompetence, Ohioans can vote to say, "Enough is enough."
The rally also addressed a contentious issue in the state's gubernatorial race. Obama defended Democrat Amy Acton following an attack advertisement from Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. The ad featured Acton's mother, Donna Arthur, disputing Acton's claims of childhood homelessness and sexual abuse by a stepfather. Acton maintains she has not seen her mother since 1978, while her brother has corroborated the abuse account. The stepfather died in 2004 after being charged with rape.
Obama called the advertisement a low point in political standards, noting that Arthur urged voters to reject her daughter based on conflicting family narratives. He supported Acton by describing her recounting of neglect and homelessness as moving.
Acton shared the stage with former Senator Sherrod Brown, who is seeking a comeback against incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted. Current polls show Democrats holding a slight lead in both the gubernatorial and senatorial races, though the outcomes are expected to be narrow.
Voters in Ohio will head to the polls in November to decide the state's leadership and congressional seats.
